Another Perspective on Topinka’s Proposal

Dan over at MoveOnandShutUp.org has taken umbrage with one of my recent posts. Dan is a firm supporter of Judy Baar Topinka and considers her a pragmatic politician. Dan also deals in wide and sweeping generalizations about people like the examples below:

The Christian Right or the South of I-80 Right is equally as disenfranchised as the Progressive Left. They don’t know much….believe me…they don’t know much at all. What they do know is that they ‘don’t want none-a-dem gays or illeeeguls coming up here to Illinois’. They always try to forcefeed some bigot politician like Jimmy ‘The Milkman’ Oberweis to the state which works anywhere south of Joliet, but in the jewel of the state (Chicago) that crap stays on the shelf. The majority of their thinkers and public faces are hate mongers. I don’t caste that idea around often because so many others toss the word ‘racist’ on me simply because I vote Republican. When I do, I mean it. Don’t like it? Prove me wrong.

How about proving you’re right Dan? Hate mongers? That’s pretty strong talk with no back up. Opposing gay marriage does not mean one hates gays and taking issue with gate crashers does not make one a racist or suggest that they are anti-immigrant. You have painted with a pretty broad brush here.

So Judy Baar Topinka, the official Dan L pick for governor got hammered by the South of I-80 Right in the primaries for not hating queer folks enough, which was apparently the only campaign platform the mouth breathing right could possibly cook up in hopes of sniffing out enough votes to put the weak Milkman on top.

Again, a pretty presumptious supposition that assumes people are single issue voters and implies bigotry where there is no real proof. People like Teri O’Brien and Tom Roeser supported Jim Oberweis and have come out against Topinka so according to Dan they are mouth breathers? While Dan thinks 37% to 31% is a veritable ass-kicking, it hardly shows a groundswell of support behind his favorite Republican Gubernatorial candidate. If you add in the 18% of the vote received by Bill Brady then the mouth breathers received 49% to 37% of the total Illinois Republican primary vote, a swing that could be problematic for Topinka in the general election. She will have to draw her support from disenchanted Blagojevich voters and that is a tough route to go.

We can argue the gambling to fund schools issue unitil the cows come home and Dan makes solid points that are nonetheless wrong but at least they merit discussion. Where he really stretches it is ruling out any part of the state south of I-80 as worthy of attention and calling the Chicago and Cook County combine Democrats pragmatic.

The real issue here is not one of conservative hate-mongering as Dan perceives but a single glaring fact that he is missing. That being that Judy Baar Topinka is no different than Rod Blagojevich in substantive thought and policy and her victory would assure that things never change. We need a viable alternative to the bipartisan combine in order to enjoy real economic growth in this state and Judy represents the old guard; the ones that have let us down all these years. In order to get better we have to stop the bleeding and it starts with a tourniquet being applied around the neck of business as usual. Judy is the face of all that has been wrong with the State for the last 30 years.

Liberal Misunderstanding in Threat Assessment

Darrin Bell, author of Candorville provides us with yet another reason to shake our heads in disbelief. Equating the events that took place at the very founding of our nation with the current geopolitical situation is not only inaccurate, it is immature and simplisitc at its very root.

The strip pictured above is the latest in his series of “alternate universe” juxtapositions that miss the target by a mile. Trying to compare an America that was ruled by an imperial government, without adequate representation and where the people were taxed on the fruits of their labor to finance other entities of the empire (that provided no benefit to themselves) with a radical religion that is hell bent on jihad and the killing of all who won’t convert is not only preposterous, it is telling.

It shows us a mindset wherein the liberals haven’t moved beyond adolescence. Can they really see the war on terror and consider it akin to the American fight for independence? Can they possibly look at George W. Bush and see Hitler? The answer is yes and it is why they must not be given control of the Government.

The liberal (read Democrat) failure to understand our current struggle against Islamofascism could be fatal. There is no reasoning with those who wish to separate us from our heads in the name of Allah. We cannot negotiate with people who strap bombs on their women and children and send them in to a crowded market to blow up civilians in honor of the glory of Mohammed. They have no government, though they are sponsored by some, they have a twisted morality that allows the oppression of women and the maiming and murder of innocents and they are fanatical in their mission to destroy us. The only true way to vanquish the threat to America and the west is annihilate them and to remove the Governments which harbor them. That is the reason we are in Afghanistan and Iraq and it is why we must back Israel in their struggle against Hamas and the Hezbollah. This is not a law enforcement issue and cannot be dealt with after something happens. We must be proactive in eradicating the menace.

Once and for all the liberals must understand, this is not a problem that we created and it cannot be settled if we just learn to understand them and their “plight”. It is a religion and philosophy that is mired in the Sixth Century and they would like you to convert or die. In the eyes of the Islamofascist, one is as good as the other. It didn’t bother them when they killed over 3000 Amerricans on our soil on 9/11, or when they killed scores of civilians in Spain and England in subsequent years. It won’t bother them to do it again.

The Patriot Act, NSA wiretapping, GITMO and military tribunals are necessary components to fighting the war on terror and in no way can be compared to the American Revolution. This is the real world and if you want to run it you need to understand how things work. Let’s make sure we leave the grown-ups in charge this fall. They aren’t perfect and they spend too much, but they understand that National Security is paramount.

Imagine If He Actually Does Something

Barack Obama, Rock Star, Man-god and saviour of the free world is touring Africa. Here in the Chicago area we get daily reminders from the biased and smitten Lynn Sweet in her paper, the Obama News which is the Democratic mouthpiece otherwise known as the Chicago Sun-Times. Sweet has been following Obama around Africa along with the rest of the media horde while he tours the home of his father. Sweet is so immersed in all things Obama that she feels the need to share it with us in the riveting series Obama in Africa, available at a newsstand near you.

We get treated by the fawning media with images of Barack and Grandma, Barack and his wife Michelle getting an AIDS test, Barack getting the bribe money charged to some media members back from corrupt government officials and a myriad of other images of Saint Obama. What’s next, Barack in the bathroom? We all know he is so pure that he creates no soil and wouldn’t even need toilet paper. He has been floated as a possible Presidential candidate in 2008 or 2012. All of this from a man who has done nothing since entering the US Senate.

He is articulate, presents well and is the prerequisite minority that makes the Democrats appear “diverse” but Obama is nothing more than an empty suit who tries to appear the “reasonable one” in fiercely partisan Washington. He has done little to distinguish himself from the pack and has spent his tenure in the Senate playing lapdog to Illinois’ Senior Senator Dick Durbin and his obstructionist ways. He better take his shot at the brass ring now because if he waits until 2012 the blossom may be off the rose and he will be forced to run on his record, or lack thereof. The distressing thing is that people (and parties) accept this as substance these days and the only requirement is to put a pretty face on their blind ambition.

It is time we start demanding more from our politicians.

Look Out Illinois

Judy Baar Topinka is rolling out her agenda. It starts with a massive $9.8 billion proposal to fund education and it involves casinos. Judy claims this is not an increase in gambling because a 10th license has been authorized but never enacted in Illinois. She hopes to locate the land based casino in Chicago for maximum revenue. She also supports adding seats in existing gambling venues.

This is a good ploy for Judy because it may help to get Mayor Richard M. Daley on board and in some estimates may help her to get elected. Heaven help us if that happens. Governor Blagojevich is equally reprehensible and will continue to cause damage to our state but there is an end in sight if Topinka is defeated.

Topinka, like current Governor Rod Blagojevich, has vowed not to raise property taxes because they view it as political dynamite and anethema to getting elected. Instead they look for alternative ways to fleece the people of Illinois. Meanwhile they promise the moon. This proposal shows that the bi-partisan political combine (as termed by the Chicago Tribune’s John Kass) is alive and well in Illinois. You can see an excellent perspective on this by Fran Eaton at the Illinois Review, a highly recommended conservative blog.

What I would really like to see is a politician take a position that is principled and honest. Gambling, like smoking before it, is easy to propose as a tax revenue source because it seemingly gores no ox and appears harmless to all with nothing but upside. This of course is a fallacy. Gambling is harmful to the public and often reacts as a tax on the poor who often view it as a quick way out of their economic woes. Run a google search and you’ll quickly come up with scores of stories of people embezzling money to pay their gambling debts, many of them educators and administrators in education. It would be far more beneficial to the people of Illinois if our government were to reign in spending, stop the give-aways and take the tax-induced economic shackles of of our business community so they can expand and produce real revenue for the state of Illinois.

Topinka must be stopped for the Illinois Republican Party to revitalize itself and for conservatives to regain a presence in state politics. Riding on the coattails of the combine like Lt. Governor hopeful Joe Birkett is doing won’t get you to the promised land. For Illinois to change for the better we need a Topinka meltdown. Vote Stufflebeam.

Immigration Good, Illegality Bad

Elvira Arellano, illegal immigrant lawbreaker turned convenient “activist” has asked a judge to block her deportation using the logic that deporting her would be a de facto deportation of her son Saul and would violate his rights as an American citizen. Kind of takes the wind out of the sails of the anchor baby denial crowd doesn’t it? The woman is portrayed as an activist protesting illegal immigration, yet the only advocating I hear is for herself. A bigger publicity hound I have never seen.

In the photo to the right we see Illinois Congressman Luis Gutierrez offering support for the lawbreaker after he submtted a letter to the President requesting that she be granted another stay. Gutierrez likes publicity almost as much as Ms. Arellano. So let’s get this story straight, Elvira enters the country illegally in 1997, is caught and deported only to re-enter three days later. Did I mention she entered illegally the second time as well? At this point Ms. Arellano had no son to use as a convenient excuse for remaining here illicitly. Since that was not enough Elvira obtained someone else’s social security number and used it to work at O’Hare Airport. She remained there, underground so to speak until she was caught up in the post 9/11 security sweeps. Then and only then was she concerned about becoming an “activist” and it really largely appears the activism is aimed at saving Arellano’s hide. She has enlisted former left wing political activist turned preacher Walter “Slim” Coleman and Emma Lozano, executive director of the Chicago immigration-rights group Centro Sin Fronteras to help her with her cause. Coincidentally, Lozano is married to Coleman. After being caught Arellano has been able to enlist such luminaries as Gutierrez, Senator Dick Durbin and the flawless one, Senator Barack Obama who were able to procure three seperate stays of deportation for her. Now the time is up and she is to be deported.

The new ploy is one among many and it is time the charade ends. She ostensibly came here for a better life, yet now lobbies Mexican President Vicente Fox for aid in the cause. Why not work with Fox to help build a country where people aren’t streaming across the border to escape? If her desire is a better life, why not learn English and make herself ultimately more employable at better positions than those “Americans won’t do”? The multitude of interviews she has done over the past few weeks have largely been in Spanish. She uses a translator for the English language interviews. Mind you, she has been here 9 years.

So it was a better life, then a son who is a citizen citing ADHD, and “other health problems”, now that the supposed medical issues are cleared up we have the citizen having his rights violated by the deportation of the Mother. If this isn’t a good case to clarify the 14th amendment language regarding “under the jurisdiction thereof” by another amendment delineating (in very precise language) what exactly constitutes citizenship , especially defining jurisdiction then I don’t know what is. A solid position would be to require that at least one parent be a native or naturalized citizen of the United States and be active in the support and rearing of said child. In the Arellano case the father left before the birth of Saul never to be heard from again. Citizen or not this is not active. Another codicil would be that the citizen or parents of the baby to be granted citizenship owe no allegience to any other country besides the United States. A sensible view on this can be found here. In the case of many border jumpers the allegience is with Mexico as they send billions of dollars back every year in hopes of returning someday. Hard work in America has become a means to an end where we are a source of cash to better their lives in Mexico. It would be in the best interests of all to forge change in Mexico wherein people would not find it necessary to leave in droves to live illicit existences in a foreign country.

Immigration can be managed through a reasonable work program that offers citizenship for those who desire it. Line jumpers like Arellano should not be rewarded for breaking the law and our lawmakers that advocate for those who violate our laws should be turned out from office by the voters. Starting with Senator Durbin and Rep. Gutierrez. Arellano has become the face of illegal immigration and should be scrutinized closely. She has exhibited a very selfish form of advocacy where she seems to be the main concern for said reform. She has shifted her argument with each legal refutation she recieves and likens herself to Rosa Parks but doesn’t even measure up to Ralph Kramden. Her selfish use of her son as a prop is even more reprehensible. She claims she won’t return to Mexico “like a coward” when that is the way she came into the U.S., under cover and illegally. It is time for her to go.

Comprehensive immigration reform starts with enforcement of the law and must include a clarification of citizenship concerning the children born on U.S. soil to illegal parents. Instead of demagoguery, we need to move forward sensibly. Most Americans are not anti-immigration as characterized by advocates for the illegals. It is the illegality that bothers them.

Differing Standards

I was just wondering why all of the supporters of Ned Lamont (D-Soros), who say he must be backed as the rightful winner of the Connecticut Democratic Senatorial primary didn’t express these sentiments to Jim Jeffords(I-Turncoat) in 2000 when he switched his party affiliation to Independent after gaining election as a Republican. He then aligned himself with the Senate Democrats which at the time threw the balance of power in the Senate to the Dems 50 - 49, with Jeffords often swinging to the Dems on close votes. It turned out to be a poor move as the Republicans regained control in 2002 leaving Jeffords without a sugar daddy.

Opponents of Sen. Joe Lieberman have accused him of supporting the President too often and have decided to run hard left with Ned Lamont. In actuality Liberman has generally been a consistent liberal that just happens to believe in strong defense and it was the support for our country that got him into hot water with the moonbat wing of the party. All indicators are that Sen. Lieberman has a good chance at gaining re-election to the Senate as an independent candidate, once again showing that the extreme left has misread the true will and sentiment of the people.

Another classic case of do as I say, not as I do is the move to insist that Texas Republicans leave former Rep. Tom Delay on the November ballot after he withdrew following the primary. This would have left the Republicans a chance to field a candidate of their choosing and give them time to properly support said candidate in the normal fashion. Delay removed himself as to not be a distraction during his current court case brought on by a very partisan political prosecutor. Instead the Dems went to great lengths by going to court insisting that Delay remain the candidate on the ballot even though he has changed his official residence to Virginia.

While we are talking different states involved here I was wondering where the cry was to keep Rep. William Lipinski on the ballot in 2004 after he withdrew in September and installed his son Dan as the candidate for the Illinois 3rd District. Another case that was even more glaring was the 2002 Senatorial race in New Jersey where Sen. Robert Torricelli (D-hypcocrisy) was lagging in the polls due to a bribery and campaign fund-raising scandal. With defeat imminent, Torricelli withdrew from the race 36 days before the general election even though New Jersey state law sets the deadline at 51 days. New Jersey democrats took the case to the highly partisan state Supreme Court who allowed the change in violation of state law and without precedent.

The GOP maintained that, under New Jersey law, Democrats missed the deadline for replacing a candidate, saying a candidate who wants to get off the ballot must do so at least 51 days before the election, and a replacement must be selected at least 48 days before the vote.

Neither Torricelli nor Lautenberg met those deadlines, but the New Jersey Supreme Court ruled unanimously that election laws should be “liberally construed” to provide a “full and fair ballot choice for the voters of New Jersey.”

.

Liberally construed? It looks more like they were fabricated out of whole cloth. How does 51 get construed to be 36? Just one in many examples of Democratic hypocrisy and government by judicial fiat when it suits them. Amazingly, we have rarely heard any mention of this since it transpired nearly four years ago. One can only respect that the Texas Republicans didn’t make a circus out of the matter and are currently mounting a write in campaign for their candidate Shelley Sekula-Gibbs. Interestingly the only reason given by Torricelli for his withdrawl was that he was trailing and didn’t want to be responsible for the Dems losing their ill-gotten control of the Senate. Apparently liberally construed means we can break the rules if we are losing, at least if you’re a Democrat in New Jersey. Delay on the other hand wished to not be a distraction, was not trailing in the polls and gave his party plenty of time to field a replacement.

With contradictions like these it is no wonder the Republicans have been able to maintain control of both houses of Congress, in spite of their out of control spending and poor record on many conservative issues. The one question that remains is how the Democrats can continue the incongruity in their actions while maintaining a straight face.

To paraphrase The Machete’ of Truth. Democrats, if we didn’t have them we’d have to invent them, but we probably wouldn’t.

Fish or Cut Bait

The case of Elvira Arellano will only get worse if the government does not do their job and enforce the law. Even the left leaning Tribune coulmnist Eric Zorn agrees she doesn’t really have a leg to stand on and is a poor example as a poster child for illegal immigration “reform”.

While I disagree with his commentary that we need to give special dispensation to the 11 million lawbreakers by letting them jump the line I must agree with the basic premise of his column. We need immigration laws as does every nation. We have a right to enforce them and must do so. Elvira’s main argument for being allowed to remain is her “anchor baby” son who was born here while she was violating our laws. Likening herself to Rosa Parks is an insult and just makes matters worse. The poll Zorn mentions is here.

In a related article, Congressman Luis Gutierrez agrees with her law breaking and has sent a letter to President Bush requesting she be allowed an extension. He also stopped by to visit her and expressed his support for her defiance of our laws. For that act alone he no longer deserves to be seated in the U.S. House but we’ll leave that for another day.

Even Dick Durbin and his sock puppet Barrack Obama have agreed she can longer expect special treatment or intervention when there arre thousands of others who would like the same consideration. It is time for the Government to take enforce the law, enter the church and send Ms. Arellano home to Mexico. Since she has no respect for the rule of law of the United States I do not believe she should receive further consideration in any manner, shape, or form. The answer to “iimigration reform” begins with enforcing the law and punishing those who break it.

Places I’ve Been

I got this map from Dragonlady who got it from Tony:

It depicts all the states I’ve visited.

create your own visited states map

I just thought it looked pretty cool and that it could give one an interesting visual perspective. Like Tony it is my desire to visit all 50 states before I cash it in. Yeah, even the Dakotas. I guess the advice for me is to go west middle age man. Just 17 more to go….

As If Anybody Really Cares

While contemplating a post on the Biloxi family’s recent trip to the Gulf Coast I noticed this column from John Kass in today’s Chicago Tribune. I must say that I have to concur.

I have generally stayed away from boring any of the few readers I do have by regaling them with the details of my ultimately uninteresting life. I am perfectly happy with it myself but don’t really think that others would find it particularly exciting. Hence I generally have kept my blogging to pop culture and politics. I wholeheartedly agree with Mr. Kass’ position that it falls under the same repugnant imposition on others that would include slide shows of another’s vacation, home movies, and wedding pictures. It has particular meaning for the family or people involved but no real interest to most of the rest of the world.

Hence I will not give a blow by blow account of our recent trip. I will answer to a few kind readers who left comments on the post announcing my abscence and give a general overview then leave you alone. Since my readers could all fit in the same booth at Burger King I hesitate to alienate any of you.

We left the Republic for Gulf Shores, AL on Friday August 4. From the Chicago area this is anywhere from a 15 - 18 hour drive depending on conditions. As Mrs. Biloxi and I have a 6 kids, we opted to do it in 2 days, finally arriving Saturday evening. The split was to avoid as many “are we there yet?” and “Daaaaad!!! He’s touching me!!!!!!!” type comments as possible which are usually followed by my own rendition of my Father’s “if I have to stop this van there is going to be a spanking!”. Things worked well and the insanity was at a minimum. Thank the Lord and technology for DVD players installed in vehicles. During the second day of the trip down I-65 we spent a great deal of time in the state of Alabama and I could swear I smelled brimstone and saw occasional fire and smoke in the distance. I could only wonder if I had gotten near the home of the Dragonlady. I set the cruise on 85 lest we get singed, not to mention the kids are scared of zombies. I never did get as far south as That One Guy. We arrived safely to our destination and the rest was pure relaxation.

As one can guess by my moniker, I spent a few years about 80 miles west of Gulf Shores and had intentions of going to the Katrina ravaged portion of the Gulf Coast to view the recovery and try to look up some old friends. Unfortunately time and circumstances prevented the trip though I was able to reconnect with a long time buddy for a little while. I have a reunion coming up and will hit Biloxi in the coming year anyway. For a better look at the Mississippi Gulf Coast you can read The World According to Carl where he blogs about it often.

The one comic episode came when my eldest male crawdad brought in a bag full of shells he had plucked out of the lagoon and placed them on a table. Within 20 minutes I noticed a shell had fallen on the floor and returned it to the bag. Shortly thereafter I noticed another and did the same. After a third I gave up and placed the bag on the floor next to a chair. I proceeded to play a game with some of the younger children when I heard a shriek from the 5 year old. She was scared to death as she watched one of the shells moving across the floor. Apparently my boy had brought home a bag full of hermit crabs. We continued to monitor the moving bag for another few hours before all of the creatures were returned to their home in the lagoon.

The purpose of and treasure I derived from our vacation was rest and communion with the family. It was immeasurable and satisfying. The other prize was the time Mrs. B and I had to just talk. About us, the kids, our families, expectations, hopes and dreams. This is an aspect of your life that can get caught in the current of daily life and drift on by if you are not careful. It is also an important way to connect and stay close. It is something more valuable than anything and should be sought after and jealously guarded.

I am a voracious reader but rarely get to finish a book due to family commitments and usually must satiate myself with magazines, newspapers and the internet. All things I can read in short bursts as time becomes available. On the trip I was able to start and finish a book as well as take two hours to play Monopoly with my daughter, spend time in the pool with all of them and generally be together and realize how much I value each individual child as well as the entity that is our family unit. We all love our kids but life has a way of limiting the truly special moments we share by the pressures of making a living. Vacations are time to recharge ourselves and recapture as many of these moments as we can. I am abundantly pleased that I came away from this trip with a bucketful and it keeps me wanting more. Don’t quit looking for these snippets because they will be gone all too soon and the last thing I want to leave the world with is regret that I left a piece of my family life unfulfilled. Think about it when you have a moment, give yourself and the family time, it will pay you back in spades.

Full Circle

Elvira Arellano broke the law not once but twice while entering the United States, continued to do so by her presence in our country and then exacerbated the problem by using a false Social Security number, so it is only natural that she would defy it on her way out.

“I will stay however long is necessary,” said Arellano. “I’m strong and I’ve learned from Rosa Parks- I’m not going to go to the back of the bus. The law is wrong.” She’s asked her supporters to call the offices of Senators Barack Obama and Dick Durbin to demand they intervene on her behalf.

She should be embarrassed at invoking the name of a civil rights icon to describe her situation. Rosa Parks lived within her own country and stayed here despite the unequal treatment she received as an oppressed black person in the Jim Crow era. She stood up for herself (and ultimately others) by forcing others to address the accepted bigotry of the time. She acted in a legal manner in every aspect; challenging discriminatory laws that are unconstitutional or oppressive within your own country is a whole other ball of wax when juxtaposed with Arellano’s situation.

Arellano may well have been at a disadvantage in her native country but instead of protesting there in an attempt to forge a better life she illegally entered ours using a fake i.d.. She was caught, deported and 3 days later entered the country illegally again. She then used the false Social Security number to work at O’Hare Airport until she was caught in the post 9/11 security sweeps. It was only then that she became an “activist” as she is now currently considered. One can understand the human survival instinct and the desire to better one’s lot in life. It becomes increasingly harder to accept the demand that they be allowed to do it in another country where laws were broken not only to enter but also to continue to live and work there. It is akin to walking in a person’s house because it is better than yours, refusing to leave and then demanding they change the law to allow you to live there. The real solution is to either improve your own or to enter your neighbor’s dwelling with permission.

The law is not wrong simply because Arellano says it is and one must note that her “activism” is completely selfish in nature. Her activity did not start until she was caught breaking the law, prior to that she had no desire to be out front helping others in a similar situation. Her current actions are self-centered in a demand that others flood Sen’s Dick Durbin and Barack Obama offices with calls and demands for intervention on her behalf. Not in protest for all others in her situation but hers and hers alone. Interesting in the mix is her statement in a Chicago Tribune article that she would not care if she has to spend 10 or 20 years in jail because she feels she has to fight. Since her last four extensions were based on the claim that her son had the condiiton of ADHD among other things and her continued presence in the country was necessary to facilitate his needs, how does a 20 year prison hitch benefit him? Will he be better off with no mother while he awaits the end of her prison sentence and deportation anyway? We have to quit considering situations that were the result of lawbreaking as validation for a continued stay in our country and eventual normalization of illegal behavior. Yes we need comprehensive reform and possibly a guest worker program. One where people enter legally and have a shot at the American dream that doesn’t jump them ahead of others in an illicit fashion. Arellano broke the law and now demands we all do something about it for her. I think I’ll take her advice and contact my Senators. I’ll demand they enforce the law and deport her forthwith.
